At 16 years old in 1962, LeRoy “Zke” Zimmerman finished high school and enrolled at South Carolina State University to study Mathematics. During a summer job delivering supplies between the all-white high school in Orangeburg, SC, and his own alma mater, Wilkinson High School, Zimmerman realized the vast differences in support for the unequal educational systems. The Wilkinson High motto was “strive to excel, not to equal.” In that pivotal moment, he made a decision to stop a shipment in progress, turn in the keys to his delivery truck, and head straight to the local chapter of the NAACP.
