Returning to Greenville Technical Charter High School felt different this time. Back on campus after several years, I witnessed a school that has grown in size and confidence, now serving over 500 students and led by a poised, student-driven Black Student Union. I delivered Dr. King’s Dream speech under the theme of “The Moral Leader,” sharing the stage with 86-year-old civil rights veteran James Felder, whose firsthand role in historic national moments continues to shape classrooms today. Coming just one day after the passing of Greenville native Jesse Jackson, the program carried a weight that moved history from textbook to lived memory. What stood out most was not nostalgia, but action, students engaging leadership, civic responsibility, and the democratic process. The day was a reminder that history is not meant to sit on a shelf. It is meant to be advanced, and the next generation is ready to carry the banner forward.

This post reflects on a third consecutive year hosting the City of Greer’s Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Life and Legacy Event, a gathering that feels less like a program and more like a shared moment of reverence, history, and forward vision. Set against Greer’s 150th anniversary and made personal by officially calling the city home, the experience blends faith, elders, civic leadership, and powerful storytelling into one rooted celebration. Highlights include a keynote from Woody Dantzler III centered on Dr. King’s enduring question of direction, and the presentation of the Keys to the City by Mayor Rick Danner to hometown hero Kris Bruton. Together, these moments underscore why this event matters. It is not just about honoring the past, but aligning a community around where it is headed next.

This post captures a powerful full-school assembly where 550 ninth-grade students experienced Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s 1967 “Blueprint” message brought to life through immersive storytelling. By weaving Dr. King’s words with two original One Voice vignettes, The Cellmate and The Carolinian, the experience connected history to real people, real choices, and real responsibility. Set against the challenge Dr. King posed to young people in Philadelphia, the post reflects on dignity, excellence, and moral purpose, reminding students that justice didn’t stop in the 1960s. It continues in how they see themselves, how they treat others, and what they choose to build with their own lives. The question lingers long after the assembly ends: what’s in your blueprint?

This post reflects on a Christmas visit to Montgomery that turned into a powerful moment of reckoning, connection, and purpose after stepping inside the Legacy Museum. What began as a family visit became an emotional journey through America’s history of racial injustice, from the haunting soil jars memorializing lynching victims to the living legacies of leaders like Dr. King and the modern-day voice of Bryan Stevenson. The experience is deeply personal, especially as it ties back to stories from Greenville, South Carolina, and the ongoing mission of One Voice, a one-man theatrical show committed to carrying these narratives forward. This piece explores how history is not distant or abstract, but present, local, and calling each of us to listen, reflect, and choose higher ground through storytelling, truth, and action.
